As the world comes together to celebrate the International Day of Education on January 24th, we are reminded of the immense power of investing in people and prioritising education. Created by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, this special day shines a spotlight on the critical role education plays in fostering peace and sustainable development.
For KwaraLEARN, a revolutionary education programme by the Government of Kwara State, this day holds a particularly special significance. We are proud to be at the forefront of delivering dramatic improvements in learning outcomes for all children across Kwara State.
Our mission is to transform all government primary schools in the state into powerful, world-class institutions, using an innovative technology and data-driven platform, coupled with high-quality learning materials, effective training, and ongoing coaching for teachers and school leaders.
Since KwaraLEARN launched in schools in April 2022, we have trained over 6,000 primary school teachers in ten Local Government Areas of Kwara State and we plan to train even more before the end of 2023. This training has already made a significant impact, with 870 primary schools and over 100,000 students now benefiting from the improved teaching methods and strategies.
As we celebrate this year’s International Day of Education, we are honoured to hear from our dedicated teachers and headteachers, who share their thoughts on the importance of education. From inspiring a love of learning to shaping and empowering future generations, education is truly the greatest gift we can give to our children. Nafiu Akande, a teacher at Bishop Smith LGEA School A, said, ‘As a teacher, I believe that education is about inspiring a love of learning in our students. It’s about helping them to discover their own passions and to develop the skills they need to succeed.’ Lawal Shakirat, a teacher at Oke-Oyi LGEA School B, said, ‘Education is the foundation for success and key to achieving our dreams. On Education Day, I’m proud to be a part of a profession that helps others reach their full potential.’ Soliu Suliat, a teacher at Karuma LGEA School B, said, ‘Education is the starting point for a better future. On Education Day, I’m reminded of the importance of teaching and learning and how it can help create a better world.’
Ramat Atanda, Headteacher at Karuma LGEA School A, said, ‘Education is the greatest gift we can give to our children. On Education Day, I’m proud to be a part of helping young minds grow and develop.’ Olanrewaju Issa, Headteacher at Iponrin LGEA School, said, ‘On Education Day, I’m proud to be a part of a profession that shapes and empowers future generations.’ Kolawole Bello, Headteacher at Oke-Oyi LGEA School A, said, ‘Education is the most important tool for creating a better world. On this Education Day, I’m grateful for the opportunity to shape the future of our youth.’
